NEW PLAYERS
INFORMATION
Henderson Sports Group welcomes new players to our
program at the beginning of each season. The program consists of the following
leagues:
- Over 40 Men's Leagues: AL, NL (Wednesday nights)
- Over 50 Men's League (Monday nights)
- Over 55 Men's League (Thursday nights)
- Coed League (Tuesday nights)
- Over 40, mixed age Men's League (Saturday
mornings)
New players are assigned to teams through a draft process that is held prior
to each season. Participants receive a team t-shirt and umpires are provided.
The leagues are somewhat competitive, but not at the expense of fun and
enjoyment. Players of all skill levels are welcome. In all HSG leagues, each
participant pays $60 for the season, which covers the cost of fields, umpires
and uniforms. Teams play doubleheaders each week with a 50-minute time limit per
game. All players bat in each game, no one sits out. Generally, there are four
seasons: Spring, Summer, Winter, and Fall. Each season runs 7 weeks plus a
playoff week.
NEW PLAYERS FAQ:
WHAT MAKES OUR LEAGUES DIFFERENT FROM
OTHERS?
- The leagues are for the enjoyment of all
players- this is the fundamental rule of HSG.
- HSG only accepts individual players, not
teams. Players are assigned to teams through a rating process.
Before each season, all new players come to Selection Night, where they take a
few swings and field plays at their requested positions, allowing coaches to
evaluate them. After the rating workout, coaches then hold a draft and select
players onto teams. All players are drafted on to teams.
At the end of each season, each player has the
option to re-enter the draft if they want to join a new team.
- To keep the games flowing, teams may score a maximum of 5
runs per inning. Each inning ends when a team gets three outs or scores 5
runs. The exception to this rule is the final inning of each game, where the
inning will not end until a team accrues 3 outs. Teams play doubleheaders each
game night.
- League rules are tailored to prevent injuries.
- We use a double first base; the left half is for the
fielders foot, and the right half for the base runner.
- There is also a second home plate placed approximately 5
feet to the right of home plate that base runners use to score. All plays at
home are force outs, and there are no collisions.
- On the base paths, runners must make every effort to avoid
collisions, or will be called out.
- Courtesy runners- In the Over 40 league, unlimited courtesy
runners are permitted, but an individual can only pinch-run once in each
inning. In the Over 50 league, there are unlimited courtesy runners.
- All players who show up for games play; no one sits on the
bench (barring injury). Teams may bat as many players as are present. Coaches
are instructed to fairly allocate time in the field so that everyone receives
playing time there as well.
- Playoffs- in most cases all teams make the playoffs, and are
seeded by regular season records.
- In the Over 40 league, the top half of the teams play in
the American League, while the bottom half of teams play in the National
League. Each league has a seperate playoff tournament at the conclusion of
the regular season.
- In the Over 50 League, Over 55 League, and Coed
League there is one playoff.
- These leagues are run by the volunteer
players and coaches. Between each season Commissioners and Managers meetings
are held. Players are always welcome to attend and propose rule changes or
suggestions on how to improve the league, but wil be asked to leave during the
management session.
- The leagues are for the enjoyment of the players and after
playing for a few years you will feel like part of a fraternity. We also have
an annual picnic for players and their families.
